sUAS & SONAR
Badlands SAR is fortunate to have both an sUAS program as well as SONAR abilities available to help aid in search efforts from the air and the water.
These are tools and "force multipliers" that help immensely in ground and water search operations when needed.
This page will provide more information as to how these tools help when covering a vast array of terrain as well asthe muddy waters of the region.

Side Scan Sonar

Side Scan Sonar imagery of a deceased person on river bottom.
Side Scan Sonar, when used properly and by trained personnel can be a game changer when searching the very challenging waterways of the region. Our waters are "muddy", meaning there is often but a few feet of visibility and most of the time, there is zero visibility.
Side Scan Sonar can "see" through that murky water and pinpoint anomalies for searchers to focus on and either identify as a positive target or negate them through further scrutiny. It saves time and enhances safety for additional efforts to be made, such as deploying divers to check out the target for further identification.
sUAS - Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems

The use of sUAS aircraft is increasing in many applications at a rapid pace. SAR is one of them. From equipping aerial drones with basic optics to thermal optics, spotlights, public address systems, and even payloads, they certainly have a useful place in the arsenal to locate and help people. They are also useful in that they can be assigned to search by a set flight pattern and map an area in real time. They can also be utilized in recording and photographing a search area for additional investigative steps to be made, such as reviewing the photos for any colorations that match what we are looking for with a person's clothing and also bones for older cases. There are many, many cases added every year where lost and deceased persons are found and recovered utilizing technology to further scrutinize aerial photography and help bring closure to missing person cases and also assist in criminal investigations of several of those same cases.

sUAS Thermal Imagery Video
These videos are a examples of our aerial drone utilizing regular and thermal imagery. The subject was concealed in dense foliage consisting of poplars, pinon, and juniper trees with assorted underbrush and grasses. The subject was invisible to the naked eye and regular optics but is immediately detectible through thermal.
This test was conducted on a summer day with partly cloudy skies.
